Bridge Engineering Certificate - Online

Motivated by the declining state of infrastructure and the number of bridges approaching the end of their service life, this fully online certificate program in Bridge Engineering with synchronous and asynchronous coursework aims to train engineers in critical areas of bridge design and evaluation including:
- Fundamentals of Bridge Design
- Accelerated Bridge Construction
- Designing Bridges for Extreme Events
- Prestressed Concrete
These areas are pivotal to understanding industry standards and improving the resiliency of bridges. Certificate holders will be well qualified for bridge engineering positions with state departments of transportation or private industry.
All students apply and are admitted to the UConn Graduate School. Credits earned within the certificate can be applied towards a Master of Engineering (MENG).

Mike Culmo, PE, is a bridge engineer with over 36 years of experience in the design and construction of bridges, and has been responsible for directing a structures and transportation design department for new expressway bridges, bridge rehabilitation, and related highway structures. He has expertise in both steel and concrete bridges and special expertise in the field of accelerated bridge construction technologies. Mike holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a Master's degree in Structural Engineering, both from the University of Connecticut. He is a licensed professional engineer and is playing a significant advisory role in the Advanced Engineering Bridge Engineering Certificate as the Bridge Certificate Program Director and has co-developed the certificate’s Accelerated Bridge Construction and Load Rating of Bridges courses.
Masters Degree in Civil Engineering
After completing the certificate program, students will have 12 graduate credits that can be applied toward a Civil Engineering Master of Engineering degree.
